No CommentsThe Neilson Hays Library has its origins in early Bangkok in the latter half of the 1800s, when Silom was referred to as Windmill Road. It was 1869, a year into the reign of King Rama V.
In that year, the Ladies Bazaar Association in Bangkok, a charitable organization founded in 1866, raised funds for a library to cater for the reading needs of the increasing English speaking community residing in Bangkok.
Back then, it wasn’t called the Neilson Hays Library but the Bangkok Ladies Library Association.
For a start, the books for the fledgling library were stored in a private residence. Later the Protestant Union Chapel in Charoen Krung Road took over this responsibility until 1900. (The Protestant Union Chapel later became Christ Church in Convent Road.) For the next 14 years the library was housed in temporary premises.
In 1881, Jennie Neilson, the lady who was to have considerable influence on the library and the present building, arrived in Thailand as part of the Protestant Mission. Jennie Neilson married Dr Thomas Heyward Hays, Chief of the Royal Thai Navy Hospital in 1887 and they moved to Bangkok.
From 1900 she was actively involved in the Bangkok Ladies Library Association for the next 20 years raising funds through annual bazaars to supplement the subscriptions.
The name of the library was changed to Bangkok Library Association in October 1911. In 1914, the association decided to buy a plot of land in Surawongse Road for a permanent home for the library to reduce the strain of rent.
One of the older roads in Bangkok, Surawongse Road was built in 1897 by the excavation of a canal which has since been covered for road expansion. Named after Chao Phraya Surawongse Wattanasak, Surawongse Road was a popular residential area in early Bangkok.
Jennie Neilson was President of Bangkok Library Association from 1914 till 1920 when she died of cholera. Dr Heyward Hays commissioned Mario Tamagno, an Italian architect, to design a building in memory of his wife Jennie.
Tamagno, like Annibale Rigotti, hailed from Turin the city renowned for its School of Architecture. The Italian duo was responsible for the Ananda Samakhom Throne Hall in 1907.
The other Bangkok landmarks by Tamagno are
Suan Kularb Residential Hall and Throne Hall in Dusit Garden
Hua Lampong Railway Station in 1910.
The new building for the library in Surawongse Road was opened on 26 June 1922 and named the Neilson Hays Library.
What piece of Italian architecture would be complete without the characteristic dome? Tamagno designed a rotunda as the grand entrance to the main building. This entrance is no longer in use and the rotunda serves as a gallery for art exhibitions today.
The stone inscription in memory of Jennie Neilson Hayes high up on the wall of the Rotunda Gallery is flanked by old photos of Jennie and Dr T Heyward Hays.
Originally set up to cater for the recreational reading of the
foreign community in Bangkok, today the Neilson Hays Library caters to a substantial local reading population, particularly children.
Activities are conducted to encourage reading habits among children and a section of the library is dedicated to the Children’s Corner. In addition, art exhibitions and meet the author sessions are also organized.
The new Café Gallery has recently been completed though the interior décor and fittings have yet to be finalized. The white single-story building, just beyond the shady courtyard, includes a café and exhibition room with a bright and airy atmosphere.
In June 2006, the Neilson Hays Library commemorated its 84th anniversary. The tradition of volunteers staffing the library continues to this day. The spirit of Jennie Neilson Hays and her fellow members of the Bangkok Library Association live on in the Neilson Hays Library.
To get there, please see the map to the Neilson Hays Library.

Ali G film, also had the Thai ambassador, ahem, "performing" This exhibition at the United Nations. While some may find offensive Thais are mostly known for this is, some people may find amusing. You might be surprised to discover, most Thais in Bangkok has never been the show infamous ping-pong, and probably seen more foreign tourists and residents have seenthis show. Who lives in Bangkok, you'll say it more Silom Patpong nightlife and even himself as the most bizarre eccentric.
Silom Road is one block from the Suan Lum Night Bazaar, Lumpini Boxing Stadium, and most of the road starts in front of Lumpini Park, a Patpong SOI (small street or alley) is right next to Silom, if from Lumpini Park to come. Yes, many Patpong Go Go bars and such, but has also become a family of touriststhanks to the night market destination. Many of the bars is not until the early morning and the night market opened otherwise. A stroll through this market filled to the brim (yes, it also reflects on Silom) with stand. It 'also very central mall, shopping center and other smaller or equal size indoor (and air conditioning) Shopping buildings on both sides of Silom Road.
Other features of the Silom night life, the ancient Hindu temples are moreDown the road in front of Narai Hotel, where you can start your evening watching the activities of the trailer and the guardian of the temple at sunset. Once this is done, you can eat on the street to eat at one of the many delicious stops, or a coffee in a bar. There are bars with girls dancing and the right of the extremely popular Irish Pub O'Reilly on BTS (elevated train) station. And if you want to stay close to the action canone of the many cheap hotels in Silom or even a luxury, such as the renowned Dusit Thani Hotel.
While Patpong ping pong show came with the district of Bangkok's most famous red light stands, you can see, there is much more to Silom night life. Too much for one article, cover, but at least you have a taste of true reality.

No CommentsLying south of Dusit and Banglamphu, Bangkok’s Chinatown, locally known as the Yaowarat district, is one of the city’s major tourist attractions. It is a showcase of Chinese culture and enterprising spirit.
The city’s Chinatown district is an old business centre that covers a large area around the main Yaowarat Road and the adjoining Chareon Krung Road or New Road.
Chinese moved into the area as early as1780’s. It is oldest ethnic enclave in the city. When the royal family’s Grand Palace was constructed in 1782 by King Rama I to mark the foundation of Bangkok as Thailand’s new capital after Ayutthaya was annihilated by the Burmese, the Chinese community was asked to move just outside the city walls. The area then became the main centre of commerce for two centuries.
At the turn of the 20th century, Yaowarat was the most fashionable part of Bangkok. It had the smartest shops, the tallest buildings, pawnshops, cinemas and Chinese operas.
The area also had a seedy reputation for the large number of opium dens, brothels (which hung green lanterns outside instead of the Western style red lights), and a fondness for gambling and drug dealing-all of which are illegal nowadays.
At present, the charms and attractions of this area are hard to describe. Thus, exploration here is a must. Many of the buildings house beautiful decorative motifs, giving a view of Chinese religions and the unique cultural history and lifestyle. Ancient Chinese superstitions have also survived here. Look closely at the sides of some houses and you will see “feng shui” mirrors, called “pat kwa”, placed strategically to deflect and chase away evil spirits.
The Chinese in Chinatown have been living in Thailand for generations, and now generally consider themselves very much as Thais — most can no longer speak any Chinese.
The genuine Chinatown lies down the busy numerous smaller roads, narrow alleys and backstreets. Many of these are full of shops selling all types of quality goods, hence a paradise for shoppers. With market stalls strewn around, you will find many all sorts of products at very attractive prices.
Yaowarat is best known for the more than 100 gold shops that can be found along both sides of the Road. Gold shops here are mostly owned and run by Chinese, reflecting the love of gold they are often thought to have.
Some of the world’s finest gold products can be found and purchased here. At almost any time of the day, shops here are crowded with people — Thais, tourists and even wholesale buyers from neighbouring countries. All gold bought here can be resold by weight for a small markdown that is strictly controlled by the government.
Yaowarat district also teems with tiny shops and curbside vendors selling a myriad of spices, seafood, fruits and vegetables. Looking for the mysterious ingredients in the arsenal of traditional Chinese medicine is also a must when visiting Chinatown. There is an amazing variety of herbal medicines and ancient potions for every ailment on sale.
You can even try speaking to the herbalist about the properties of the medicines and hear their fantastic stories – myth and natural science – with your purchase! The area is also a steamy realm of touts, shoppers and suppliers, of carts, motorcycles and men carrying big bales of cloth on their backs, all made hazy by the smoke from roasting chestnuts and a hundred braziers cooking snacks of meat pies, biscuits, pork and chicken. It even has antique shops, tiny machine shops, clothing stores and stands offering unidentifiable junk. Traditional Chinese paintings and porcelains, Thai ceramics and figurines are also sold here at bargain prices.
At night, it is always a delight to visit Yaowarat. When getting dark, this lively Chinese community becomes the largest Chinese restaurant in Bangkok, serving a wide variety of food until well past midnight. Dozens of eating establishments offer everything from shark-fin soup to fried mussels and steamed pork innards served on rice or noodles, birds-nest soup, dim sum, shark fin soup and many other traditional Chinese delicacies.
Hundreds of hawker stalls also electrifies the atmosphere of the streets around here. These best and cheapest food stalls typically come with favourite dishes including khao tom (boiled rice), khao kha mu (stewed pork leg on rice), and many, many more.
Every year, the Chinese New Year Festival at Yaowarat is celebrated with a big bang. It features parades, dragon dances, firework displays, opera shows and other traditional Chinese performances. At this time of the year, Bangkok’s Chinatown springs into colourful and hectic life, with light, red and gold decorations. Tens of thousands of residents opt to stay home to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The celebration draws hundreds of thousands of visitors, hence a good chance to promote this area of Bangkok.
While Bangkok has many places and surroundings to offer, a visit to the district of Yaowarat would be a fascinating journey to see a way of Chinese cultural essence and heritage that could hardly be found anywhere else in Thailand.
